Date Cake

date-cake

My buddy Ghada posted the most delicious date cake on Instagram a few months ago and of course I had to ask her for the recipe. As you all know, I love dates and pretty much any recipe that involves them I feel like I need to make. I kept the recipe the same just reducing the amount of cinnamon since I am not a big fan of too much of the spice, but if you do go ahead and add a bit more. You can use any dates that you have on hand. My little flower on top shifted during baking and came out looking like tribal art, but hey whatever I am not even mad because it tasted great.

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking-powder
Pinch of salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
100 Gram of butter (Room Temperature)
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup dates, pitted and chopped + 4 whole and pitted for the top
1/2 cup yoghurt
2 eggs
cinnamon and sugar for dusting on top

1. Pre-heat oven to 350F. In a mixing bowl add butter and sugar then with a hand mixer blend. Add baking powder, salt, cinnamon, vanilla, eggs and yogurt, blend until combined then add flour, mixing well. Fold in chopped dates.

2. Grease a 10-inch round cake pan then carefully pour mixture into. Place 4 date on top. Place in the oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

3. Sprinkle top with cinnamon and sugar mixture.

Yields: 1 10inch cake

  • Salaam ya Noor

Many years ago in Dubai I had something called a “Datebon” at Cinnabon. It was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten, and I am sure you as a fellow date lover would have appreciated it. I have tried to recreate it with no success. A challenge for you perhaps?

    • wa alaykum salam, Oh wow I do not think I have saw that but they do have date ice-cream at times in Baskin Robins yum. Now thanks you made me want to make these lol.

  • As-Salaamu Alaykum Noor,

I would like to bake this cake sometime insha’Allah I know you don’t like too much sweet in cakes but for me nothing beats a Sticky Toffee Pudding a classic British dessert using dates.

    • Wa alaykum Salam, I am sure you would love it. That is what I love about dates they are natural sweetener.

  • A question for Asmaa on her comment above:

How do you make your Sticky Toffee Pudding with dates? Do you substitute dates for some of the sugar or add them in addition? What volume or weight of dates do you use?

    Many thanks

    • I did a search for toffee pudding with dates and found tons of recipes. Asmaa you were right it looks crazy sweet.

    • as-Salaamu Alaykum,

Apologises for my late reply. I’ve only ever made it once in the form of a cake from a recipe book (I can’t locate it right now but if I do I will let u know) traditionally though it’s in the form of a pudding which I’m hoping to try out this recipe soon inshaAllah http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3682/ultimate-sticky-toffee-pudding but like noor said its super sweet so only the real hardcore sugar lovers enjoy it.

  • Thank you for the idea, I also did the search and found some great-looking recipes.
