Daoud Basha

This is an irresistible meatball filled with spices and cooked in tomatoes. An amazing combination over rice. Daoud Basha is popular all over the Middle East.

2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup pine nuts
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1/2 tablespoon Arabic Spice mix
1 black lemon
3 tablespoons sunflower oil
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup water

1. In a large bowl add meat, pine nuts, tomato paste and Arabic Spice mix. Blend together well with hands. Make meatballs into the size of grapes.

2. In a 4-quart saucepan on medium-high heat add oil and fry onions until tender. Add meatballs and fry until golden. Add tomato sauce, water, black lemon and bay leaf. Allow Raise heat to high allow to come to a full boil then reduce to medium heat for 20 minutes. Serve with white rice.

Yields: 4 servings

    This looks amazing too – wow – dinner time at your place must be great – you have so many recipes! I have a question – what is black lemon? Is it preserved lemon like what you find in moroccan cuisine?

    No it is actually a dried lemon or lime that also has a smoky flavor. You can find then at any Arabic store. They are really nice to cook with.

    And thanks so much I get bored easy so I like to have new recipes all the time so we can not get bored over it. I grew up in a house that was like monday fish night, tuesday pizza night. I just could not stand that anymore, lol.

    I tried these too! it was Ya Salaam week at my home last week! I love the pine nuts in the meatballs, it was really good, I served it with vegetable rice.

    This was absolutely delicious. Our rural groceries don’t carry anything exotic, let alone black lemon, so I improvised with a bit of lemon juice. It was enjoyed by the whole family.

    I am so glad that you liked it. Lemon juice works well thats what I also use if I do not have it on hand. You can actually do that with a lot of my recipes (use other things) if you ever need any help let me know.

    Noor, how can we replace the black lemon in case we could not find it in the arabic store?
