Camel Milk and Date Scones

 


I love camels milk it taste creamy and fresh just like a glass of whole milk yet with a slight salty aftertaste. It has been used medicinally for centuries by nomadic people, is the closest to human mother’s milk and contains 10 times more iron and three times more vitamin C than cow’s milk. As Muslims we have always known about the benefits of drinking Camels milk and eating dates.

These scones have been made with fresh camel’s milk and plump sukary dates straight from the tree. The process of making these are about the same as biscuits. You do not want to overwork the dough. They are so amazing straight from the oven with a cold cup of milk or hot cup of chai. I plan to make some at night during Ramadan placing the cut dough in the fridge then popping in the oven for a
quick sahoor

2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup softened butter
2-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup chopped dates
2 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup camel’s milk
Topping:
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1. Preheat oven to 425F.
2. In a large mixing bowl add flour, baking soda, salt and sugar, mix. Cut in butter until mixture is coarse. Add dates, milk and eggs, mixing but not over mixing.
3. Turn mixture onto a lightly floured surface kneading for a few minutes until a thick dough is made. Pat into a 10×6 inch rectangle. With a knife cut the slab into six 3 inch squares. Then cut each square diagonally in half.
4. Place a non-stick baking mat or parchment paper on a baking sheet. Then carefully place scones onto sheet. Sprinkle tops with sugar and cinnamon mixture then place into the oven baking for 12-14 minutes.
Yields: approximately 2 dozen

    Wow, this looks delicious for Ramadan indeed! The only ‘problem’ I have is that camel’s milk is a bit hard to get here. They do sell it sometimes at the Moroccan supermarket, but most of the time it’s not available. Anyway, is it possible to use cow’s milk instead?

  • Oh and a question: do you thing its possible to put these in the freezer after baking and cooling?

  • I am not sure where you all would be able to get it in your countries but I am sure you would somewhere. You can easily substitute cows milk for this even the same exact amount. Yes, I am sure you could do that UmmHafsa. I like to do things like this during Ramadan bc I hate waking up early as it is lol.

  • Well I’ll go to the nearest town where they sell camel’s milk normally this week insha’Allaah, and otherwise I’ll just substitute it. Jazaaki Allaah khayran for your advise sis! And yeah, waking up early is a bit complicated for me as well *lol*

  • Dh has never been able to get me to try Camels milk, he should lie to be one day and say it’s regular milk.. The edge of the scones look perfect MashAllah and not too much sugar, great recipe.

  • SO you have tried camels meat but not the milk LOL I am the opposite I dare not taste the meat but the milk OMG its amazing I know you would love it and your boys would too. My friends kids drink it all the time mashAllah they are so strong. BTW its like Viagra in the Gulf they say :p

  • Ok then I’m going to go out and buy some, lol… Jk! Yes, I tried the meat and didn’t like it, it’s way too strong for my taste…

  • Oh I did not mean for us I just mean that’s what they say around here LOL but what do they not lol. I tried some camel samboosas and they were good.

  • Yeah, I found it walhamdulillaah. Made a 10km trip by bike to buy it :)The milk was quite expensive here, about 6 euros for half a liter (i think it’s about 24 riyal) It tasted good, a bit creamy. The scones were great, but there was a bitter taste in some of them and I don’t know where it came from. Maybe from the baking soda? I’m going to try them again insha’Allaah and will by trying to find out where that taste came from. Would it be an option to use baking powder instead of baking soda?

  • Wow thats weird I wonder what it was? Mine did not have any sort of bad taste all they were actually sweet as they should be. Where your eggs fresh and what dates did you use?

  • *lol* I’m still wondering what it could be as well. I think it had something to do with the baking soda, I might have used to much of it. Eggs were fresh and dates were the Madina ones (probably not very fresh, that’s hard to get in the Netherlands). I’ll try it again soon insha’Allaah using baking powder instead of soda.

    Coming over to bilaad al Haramayn would just be a dream come true. I still dream a lot about the lovely laban (and of the Haramayn, of course:)).

  • Yea its weird bc the milk should take away the taste of any baking soda it has since that is the acidity that takes it away. You could try the powder since it has a bit of the soda in it anyway, it should work again bc of the milk. Let me know.

    Here in Kansas, USA, we do not have camel milk handy, so I used cow milk and also added walnuts to the mix, they came out nice and flaky. Thanks
